Why does my dryer run but not heat?

If the drum turns but the clothes stay cool, the heat is missing, not the motor. In an electric dryer that can be a heating part, a safety fuse, a thermostat or a power-supply problem. In a gas dryer it can be the igniter or the gas supply.

Check what you can see. The cycle should be on a heat setting rather than air-only. The lint filter should be clean, and the load should not be soaking wet from the washer. If the dryer breaker tripped, reset it once.

Past that, stop and call. Heating elements, fuses and gas parts are not home jobs.

Why does my dryer take too long to dry?

A dryer that needs two cycles for one load is often short of airflow rather than short of heat. Start with a clean lint filter, a smaller load and clothes that came out of the washer well wrung out.

Then see where the hot air goes. While the dryer runs, the flap on the outside vent should be pushed open by moving air. If it barely moves, the vent may be clogged somewhere along its run. Tell us when you call; do not take the vent apart or pull the dryer from the wall.

Why is my dryer squealing or thumping?

A squeal often points to a worn part under the drum, such as a roller, a belt or a pulley. A thump can come from a worn drum support, or from something loose inside. Check the drum and the pockets of the last load for a coin, a shoe or a zipper.

If the noise continues, stop using the dryer. Running a worn part can damage the ones around it. Those parts sit behind panels, so call for this one.

Why won't my dryer start?

Check that the plug is seated, the door latches fully, the child lock is off, and you have pressed start; some models need a firm press or a hold. An electric dryer runs on a double breaker, so make sure both halves are switched on, and reset a tripped one once.

If the dryer hums without turning, or the breaker trips again, stop and call.

Is my dryer gas or electric, and does it matter?

Say whether it's gas or electric, if you know. The two make heat in different ways, which changes what could be wrong.

If you smell gas, leave the home first, and call the gas company or 911 from outside. Do not switch anything on or off on your way out.

Whatever the fuel, lint is a fire risk. Lint that builds up in the dryer or its vent can start a fire, so empty the filter after every load, and do not ignore weak airflow.

What should I tell you when I call?

Gas or electric, as above. Also useful:

• Brand and model number, which are often on a label inside the door opening.
• What it does: runs with no heat, heats but takes too long, makes a noise, or does nothing.
• When it started, and what it did just before: a squeal, a burning smell, or a sudden stop.

If you smell burning, stop using the dryer before you call.
